How to Write an eBook

As I mentioned in my previous post, the hardest part of writing is the first sentence. Same thing can be said when trying to create an eBook. eBooks are great ways to showcase your knowledge on a particular subject. You don’t need to write a 250 page book, but write a more focused eBook on a particular niche. Provide useful information, and you’ll have yourself a successful eBook that can be used for effective viral marketing purposes. You can even sell your eBooks if you feel the quality is worth it, and you’re not concerned with the viral aspect of a free eBook.

When viewing this as a whole project or from an overall perspective, it’s going to seem daunting and you may procrastinate or decide against compiling an eBook. When putting together your idea for an eBook, it’s important to break things down. You can do this by topic or section. As with anything, you’re road to a complete eBook may be bumpy with detours, but the only way to the finish line is by going step-by-step.

The first step in compiling an eBook, is deciding on your topic. It’s helpful if you’re knowledgeable in the topic beforehand. This way you can provide useful insight for your readers and it showcases your skill as an expert in the field. Once you have identified your target market and topic, then you’ll want to get organized. Set up folder on your desktop. Add notes, ideas, and images if you’d like, also compile a list of resources you plan on using. Keep things organized and well structured from the beginning, and it will pay dividends in the end.

When you’re prepared to start writing your eBook, its helpful if you have a working title in mind. Helpful, but not neccessary. Having a title helps your writing focus and keeps your overall story in perspective. Your titles should be clever, but concise. Always strive for clarity in your titles so reader’s will know the topic by reading the title.

Whether you’ve settled on a title or not, you’ll next want to focus on a thesis statement. This doesn’t necessarily have to be something that’s published in your eBook. Your thesis statement should be short, two or three sentences, and define the topic you are addressing. Typically you want to identify a problem and how your book will help solve that problem. Chapter ideas will spring from your thesis statement. Once this thesis is fine-tuned, you’ve built the foundation for your eBook. This foundation will allow your eBook to grow chapter by chapter. It’s important to remember that all chapters must support your thesis statement. This will help you keep focused while writing your eBook.

Something that most eBook authors fail to do, is keep your eBook user friendly. Your writing needs to remain engaging. Images, advice, tips, photos, graphics, testimonials and anecdotes are successful ways to keep readers reading. You can also include cliff notes on the side for quick access to information that help break up the density of the pages. Since eBooks are read on screen, its important to give your readers eyes a break. An effective strategy for this is using bullted and numbered lists. This makes information easy to absorb and provides the necessary mental break from paragraph after paragraph of information.

When you’re putting the final touches on your book, you should ask yourselves these questions:

Does your book present useful information and is that information currently relevant?
Will the book positively affect the lives of your readers?
Is your book dynamic and will it keep the reader’s attention?
Does you book answer questions that are meaningful and significant?

If you can answer yes to these questions, you can feel confident about the potential of your new ebook.

Once you have your eBook written, don’t forget to spell check and proof read for any minor punctuation errors. You can ruin a promosing eBook with poor grammar and run-on sentences. Lastly, you need to focus on an eye catching design. Find a font that’s readable and stick to it. Using dozens of fonts will just tire your readers before they even open your eBook.

When you have your eBook complete, you can determine your goals in terms of publishing. Will this be something you sell as a product, or will you offer it for free in exchange for completing a survey or signing up for a newsletter. Do you plan on creating an e-course, or will you use the ebook to attract affiliates? Chances are, if you have yourself a quality eBook you’ll find success with it one way or another.

How to Overcome Writer’s Block

As I was brainstorming a topic to discuss, I realized I wasn’t sure where to go with this post. I was actually going through a bit of a writer’s block. Then it dawned on me, write about ways to overcome writer’s block! Just about any writer, author, or blogger has experienced it. So, what is writer’s block and how do you deal with it?

Typically the phenomenon starts with having to write something, and usually on a deadline. Writer’s block is the demon that lies on a blank page. You know the topic, but for whatever reason you just can’t put it into words. Frustration certainly begins to take hold, maybe even panic as your deadline nears. The tighter the deadline, the worse that feeling becomes.

Writer’s block affects all writers. There is no immunity, even for those who are never short of words, they have experienced it at some point. There are a number of factors that are contributing to this blank state of mind:

1. Perfectionism. You demand perfection, and because of this you’ll often times get it. However, it can prohibit you during a state of writer’s block. Writing a Shakespearean masterpiece doesn’t need to happen every time your pen touches your pad, or your fingers touch your keyboard.

2. Editing, not Composing. Sometimes it’s best just to let your creative juices flow. It may not make sense, and may actually come out as gibberish, but at least it’s a start. Run with it, don’t worry about your grammar or punctuation at this stage.

3. Self-consciousness. Falling along the lines of perfectionism, you’re more focused on what people are going to think of you or your writing. When you’re going through writer’s block, you just need to throw caution to the wind and pretend as if no one else is going to see this. It’s like a public speaker that pretends everyone in the audience is naked.

4. Can’t get started. As they say with Football, the first points are the hardest to score. The same can be said about writing, it’s usually the first sentence that’s the hardest to write. By starting off with random thoughts on a particular subject, it will get your creative juices flowing. You can always worry about fixing it up later.

5. Lack of concentration. You have every possible thing going on around you. Maybe your going through personal/family issues and can’t think. Your mind is wandering, and you can’t focus on the task at hand. I always recommend a quiet environment where you can truly focus your attention on the goal. Some people like to listen to music while they write, but I don’t. I find it too distracting and instead of writing I’m sitting there singing along. Believe me, it doesn’t sound pretty.

6. Procrastination. This might just be everyone’s middle name. People are often procrastinators and this isn’t helping your writer’s block syndrome. Set goals and stick to them. If you plan on writing 3 blog posts today, then focus your attention on accomplishing that goal and don’t worry yourself with what you’re going to have for dinner.

Hopefully, realizing  writer’s block and how it’s caused will push you towards conquering the syndrome. Be prepared and stay focused, and soon writer’s block will be in the rear view mirror.

How to Automatically Post Twitter Updates to Your Blog

I have been asked a couple of times how I get my Twitter posts to automatically display in my blog. So, I figured I’d take a moment and share with you the great Twitter Tools plugin for WordPress. Simply visit the Twitter Tools website and download the plugin. Upload the plugin where you normally place plugins for WordPress. If you are not sure how to upload plugins, then please visit this WordPress Plugin Help Page.

Once you have the Twitter Tools installed, you can see all of the options. You can choose to post your tweets immediate, daily, weekly, or even monthly. I have it set to weekly, and I have it set to automatically post every Sunday afternoon. All you need to do is supply it with your Twitter username and password, and then configure the settings the way you want and you’re good to go. It’s a very simple and you never have to think about it again after you’re done!

Passed the Google Adwords Certification Exam!

Late on December 30th, I finally got around to taking my google adwords certification exam. It has been awhile in the making, but I figured with the holidays here it was time to get it done. I had to go through 9 hours of audio at the Learning Center, run a Pay Per Click Campaign for 90 days, and also spend at least $1,000 over the course of that 90 days.

I was very nervous going into the exam, I get like that when it comes to tests for some reason. You have 90 minutes to complete the test of 110 questions. Some of the questions were pretty easy even for Adwords beginners. However, some questions intentionally try to trick you and it’s important that you understand the process to fully grasp what’s being asked. You can conveniently mark questions for later, which helps you get through the exam questions you know at a quicker pace. Provided you have enough time, you can then go back and research the questions you aren’t sure of.

It’s nearly impossible to pass this if you have not gone through the Learning Center. I would also suggest that you take the test quizes on the Learning Center page as well so that you get a better feel for the actual exam. All in all though, I think it will be a great asset to have this Certification. I get to display the Google Adwords logo on my website, and it definitely adds a solid credential for me when talkng with prospective customers. I also get to offer new clients $100 free in Pay Per Click campaigns, as long as they have not previously setup an AdWords account. A very cool selling point as well!

Below you can see the AdWords Certification logo and how it links directly to Google for vertification.
